07 - 08 - 08  -  Mike Peppe Report:

Our swimmers put up some great swims last weekend at the Mike Peppe Inv. at Ohio State, but our numbers were very low on this holiday weekend meet. Again our Team Records continue to fall as our long course swimming keeps getting better and better! Gavin Mickelson led the way with 2 new Team Records for the 11-12 boys! Gavin broke both the 200 and 400 free records in only his 2nd meet as an eleven year old! Kendra Crew raced to improve her record in the 200 breast for 13 - 14 girls!

Our "biggest loser" for the meet was Courtney Speakman, dropping over 23 seconds in her individual events! Quinn Mickelson was the "biggest loser"for the guys, dropping nearly 10 seconds in his events!

07 - 05 - 08  -  Olympic Trials Report - Final:

On our final day at 2008 Olympic Trials, Margo Geer raced to her 5th "best time" of the meet, this time in the 50 free! Margo came in at 26.15! This was the top 15 - 16 girls time at the meet, Margo's 2nd National Junior Team cut, qualified again for the Fina World Youth Games, placed 41st overall (up from 98th place), and defeated the girl who won Y Nationals ahead of Margo in April! Margo's time converted to yards is a 22.78! So an outstanding meet for Margo, going 5 for 5 best times in swims at the biggest meet in the country!

07 - 04 - 08  -  Olympic Trials Report:

Margo Geer swam her 4th event of the meet, a time trial in the 200 back. Swimming to a 2:18.54, under her best time by nearly a second and made the new qualifying standard for U.S. Nationals / U.S. Open in August! This time converts to around a 1:58 in yards. Margo has one event left, the 50 free, tomorrow.

07 - 03 - 08  -  Olympic Trials Report:

Each swim for Margo Geer just keeps getting better and better! This morning Margo raced in the 100 free, seeded in 97th place, and flew to a time of 55.92, leading her heat the entire way! The whole 2nd 50 all the announcer talked about was how well Margo was doing and where she was from. So if people didn't know who we were before, they do now!  Margo's time placed her 30th overall, and only .49 out of making semi-finals at night! With that time, Margo was the 2nd fastest 15-16 girl at the meet and is now ranked around 95th in the World! That makes Margo SPY's first World Ranked swimmer!

Margo's time qualifies her for the 2008 - 2009 USA National Junior Team for the 2nd year in a row. And Margo also qualified for the Fina World Youth Games in Mexico next week!

For those of you who want to relate this to yards, that would be around a :48 in the 100 yard free!

07 - 01 - 08  -  Olympic Trials Report:

Swimming in her 2nd event at Trials, Margo Geer did a time trial in the 200 free and had another huge drop! Margo went 2:04.90, dropping from a 2:06.13 from earlier this summer at the UltraSwim in North Carolina. This time would convert to around a 1:48 in yards!

06 - 30 - 08  -  Olympic Trials Report:

Margo Geer's first swim at Olympic Trials is in the books. Swimming the 100 backstroke and seeded 78th, Margo just missed winning her heat and dropped nearly a second off her best time. Margo went 1:03.44 and placed 46th overall and was the 2nd fastest backstroker from Ohio! Overall in the country, Margo was the 6th fastest 15-16 year old at the meet in the 100 back, all of this with over 12,000 people watching!. One other fact to keep in mind, usually only 8% off all swims at Trials are best times, so Margo is well ahead of the national average!  One note on tonite's TV coverage, in the men's 100 breatstroke final, 8th seeded John Criste is a former swimmer under Coach Bruce, John started swimming when he was 11 years old and was the youngest male at the 2004 Olympic Trials under Bruce.

04 - 12 - 08  -  YMCA Nationals - SPY Swimmers Make History:

This year's YMCA Nationals ended as a "history making" event for SPY! Margo Geer led the way by becoming SPY's first female National Champion! Margo took that honor in the 100 freestyle, clocking a 50.20, not only winning the event but set a new Ohio LSC Record, a new League Record, and a new SPY Team Record! Margo's performance was key in our overall Team results. SPY finished 19th overall out of over 250 teams in competition. That was not only our best finish in history but with 86 points, this was our highest point production as well! SPY finished 3rd in Ohio teams, with M. E. Lyons first in Ohio, 13th overall,  and Countryside second in Ohio, 14th overall. The key fact here is that Countryside was 281 points ahead of us last year and M. E. Lyons was 137 points ahead. This year, M. E. Lyons is only 52 points ahead of us and Countryside is a mere 45 points ahead. As we continue to make big improvements, next year we could be looking very good on both the State and National level!

Our finalists were led by Margo as she scored in the top 4 in all of her individual events. First in the 100 back, Margo set a new Ohio LSC Record, a new League Record, and a SPY Team Record with a 55.73, and finished 4th in finals (56.18). Next in the 50 free, Margo bettered last year's finish with a 2nd place (23.59). Next in the 200 free, Margo set a new SPY Team Record and a 4th place finish (1:49.70). Then in her final event, the 100 free, Margo made history by taking the gold in that event!

Pat McHugh led the guys to the medals stand, placing 5th in the 100 back, clocking a 51.33! This was a much improved finish from 8th place last year and this was Pat's first Junior National cut as well as a new SPY Team Record! Next in the 200 back, Pat set a new SPY Team Record in prelims with a 1:54.49 and finished 16th overall in finals.

Our SPY Team Record books were definately being rewritten this past week, by Margo in the 100 back, 200 free, and 100 free, then Pat in the 100 and 200 back. Our next record breaking performances came from Drew Keriazes in the 200 breast, going 2:12.73 in prelims. Next was Kendra Crew in the 100 breast, clocking a 1:07.06, setting a new Team Record for the 13/14 girls. Then came our much improved National relays. Our men's 400 free relay set a new Team Record at 3:16.32 (Danny Powderly, Drew Keriazes, Pat McHugh, Anders Samuelson). Next came our men's 800 free relay with a Team Record 7:18.44 (Danny Powderly, Drew Keriazes, Mike Pettit, Anders Samuelson). And the final Team Record was set by our women's 200 free relay, clocking a 1:38.97 and placing 15th in finals! Our relay consisted of Kendra Crew, Lauren Funk, Liz Samuelson, and Margo Geer. So overall our swimmers set 10 new SPY Team Records!

Other notable swims included Pat McHugh in the 100 fly (54.16), Ally Lohnes in the 100 back (1:02.41), Patrick Greitzer in the 200 IM (2:11.24), Kendra Crew in the 100 free (55.72), and Mike Pettit in the 200 back (2:00.80). Overall we same at nearly 90% either equal or best times. (The average for all Teams is around 25% best times at this meet.) So we are making great progress!

02 - 27 - 08  -  STATE RECORD FALLS!

Margo Geer is in the record books again! Her time of 50.30 at the Ohio High School State Championships was also an Ohio Swimming Record for 15 - 16 girls!
