Final Nationals Report

Our SPY National Team made history again by scoring a total of 64 points and placing 21st place overall,
up from last year's 24th place. SPY was the 3rd best team from Ohio. The top team from Ohio was
Countryside, placing 5th with 367 points. Next came M.E. Lyons placing 11th with 223 points.

Now we have 1 year to prepare to place in the top 10 overall and bring home a National title or two!
Our journey towards this goal begins on April 16th. Letters will be sent out this coming week to
each family explaining how our spring and summer training/conditioning program will work.
We hope to have everyone on board for the summer!

News From Nationals-Wednesday Results

As of the end of Wednesday night our 2007 National Team had scored over 60 points, beating the record
number of points scored last year!

Nationals Update

History was made on the first night of the YMCA Nationals in Fort Lauderdale! Margo Geer raced to a
2nd place finish in the 100 backstroke, going 56.45, and just missed winning her first National title by
.01 of a second! Margo's silver medal was the highest female swimmer finish in history by a SPY swimmer! Margo then
stepped up to the blocks in the 50 free and came away with a 3rd place finish, going 23.63. There was
a tie for first place at 23.57, so Margo missed her 2nd National title by just .06 of a second!

On the boy's side, Pat McHugh headed into the 100 backstroke seeded 35th, but was determined to
make it back to finals at night. Pat raced to a 53.41 and not only made it back at night, but he made
the big final, placing 8th at the end of prelims! Pat swam to an 8th place finish at night at 53.65!

Lauren Funk raced to a 25.40 in the 50 free; Anders Samuelson placed 68th in the 50 free with a 22.33
while Pat Mchugh placed 118th in the 50 free at 22.66. For the 200 medley relays, our girls went 1:54.97
and placed 63rd, while our guys swam to a 1:41.40 and placed 38th!

Overall, SPY was ranked 12th after the first day of competiton! Last year our National Team ended up
tied for 24th position overall with 60 total points. Our 2007 National swimmers are looking to shatter that
mark by the end of the week!

Updates will be posted as the meet progresses!

SPY Off To Nationals

Our National swimmers are in training for their final short course meet of the season, Y Nationals in
Fort Lauderdale! This year we are taking 10 swimmers to Nationals! Included on the National Team are
Kendra Crew, Lauren Funk, Margo Geer, Anna Jean Petroff, Liz Samuelson, Daniel Gummel, Drew Keriazes,
Pat McHugh, Mike Pettit, and Anders Samuelson.

Within the Team we have 4 rookies in their first individual events! They include Kendra, Lauren, Drew, and
Mike, Anders and Liz will be representing SPY at Nationals for the first time on relays!

Our veteran swimmers include Margo, Pat, Anders, and Daniel, so they will be counted on to lead the
Team at the Nationals!

In 'THE ZONE'

Our SPY Zone swimmers headed to Ohio State for the Great Lakes Zone meet. This meet allows many of
the top swimmers from Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and West Virginia to race face to face. SPY's main goal
at this meet is to get one last fast meet to either make National cuts or to just finish up the short course
season.

Drew Keriazes came through in the 200 breast making his first Y National cut in the 200 breaststroke!
This was a hugh accomplishment considering that Drew was out of training for nearly 10 weeks due
to a broken collarbone. Danny Powderley was right on Drew's heels, but just missed the cut in 3 separate
attempts!

With over 1400 swimmers in competition, gold medals were very hard to come by, but both Kendra Crew
and Matt Pettit came away with gold medals, Kendra in the 11-12 50 breast, and Matt in the 10 & under 50
back! Kendra also placed in the top 8 for both the 100 breast and 100 IM. Patrick Greitzer came through
with an 8th place finish in the 100 breast for 13-14 guys. Anders Samuelson came through with an 8th
place as well in the 100 free for 15 & older guys.

Our swimmers who placed in the 9 thru 16 range included Kendra Crew, Drew Keriazes, Matt Pettit,
and Jeff Ross.

Congratulations to our 38 Zone swimmers on a job well done!

GO SPY!

HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS / MARGO GEER STATE CHAMP - 50 FREE/100 FREE:

The Ohio High School State Championships feature the fastest high school swimmers in the State and
some of the fastest high school swimmers in the country! SPY is proud to announce that we have
produced one of the fastest female sprinters in the country in Milford Center Fairbanks freshman
Margo Geer! Margo came in seeded first in both the 50 and 100 free for Division II, so it was a
question of just how fast will she go and can she beat the Division I champion as well. In the
50 free, Margo raced to a gold medal at 23.60, and just missed defeating the D-I champ by a few
hundreths of a second! But in the 100 free Margo took the gold at 51.34 and also defeated all
D-I challengers! Margo becomes the first State Champion from SPY in nearly 30 years, and she
does it twice in one meet!

Our next individual qualifier was Kenton Ridge sophmore Lauren Funk, enjoying her first trip to
the State Championships! Lauren swam a strong 50 free, placing 12th overall in a 25.12! Next in
the 100 free, Lauren went 56.24, placing 22nd overall, moving up 2 spots from her 24th place
seeding! Next year we might see a 1 - 2 finish by our girls in both the 50 and 100 frees!

On the boy's side, both Pat McHugh and Anders Samuelson led the first ever Catholic Central
boy's 200 free relay to a 16th finish in finals and had a strong showing in the 200 medley as
well, but finished out of the finals. So this was a big step for the Central program, next year
both individuals and relays should be in the points!

Congratulations to all of our high school swimmers, regardless of your level of success!
This should be motivation for you to train even harder over the summer and next year so
that you move on to the next level in your swimming career!

High School Districts

Our SPY swimmers did an outstanding job at this year's District Championships! Swimmers
use the District meet to qualify for the State Championships in Canton.

Our girls swam at 93% best times and made numerous new Y Championship cuts along the way!
Freshman Margo Geer led the way with 2 more record setting swims in the Central Ohio District!
First Margo swam a 23.54 in the 50 free, setting not only the District Record, but the State Record
in that event as well! Next was the 100 free and another District record, winning in a time of 51.41,
just missing the State Record of 51.1! Both of these swims have Margo seeded first at the State
Championships!

In the Southwest District Championships, Kenton Ridge sophmore, Lauren Funk was our next
State qualifier. Lauren swam the 50 free in a 24.65, making both her first Y National cut and seeding
her 8th at the State Championships! Next in the 100 free, Lauren swam a 55.66, getting her the
24th seed at the State Championships and ever so close to her 2nd Y National cut! Dayton
Carroll freshman Taylor Massie is headed to State on her 200 medley relay and swam a 1:13.78
in the 100 breast and made her Zone cut! A couple of our girls making some huge drops included
Liz Samuelson in the 200 IM (2:27.06) and Victoria Burcham in the 100 back (1:04.65), a new
Zone cut & 200 IM (2:26.70). The rest of our District qualifiers included Paige Smith in the 100 breast
for Division I, Taylor Massie in the 500 free, Liz Samuelson in the 100 breast, Maureen Day in the
100 back and 200 IM, and Alicia MacLeod in the 100 back. District relay swimmers included Kara
Greitzer and Corrin Klang.

On the boy's side, with only 1 division, it's very tough to make it to the State Championships.
Our boys swam at nearly 100% best times and just missed qualifying 2 for State in individual
events, but did get 2 relays qualified! Catholic Central junior Anders Samuelson swam a lifetime
best 22.02 in the 50 free and made alternate in that event. Next was Central sophmore
Pat McHugh in the 100 back, 54.24 and making alternate! Both Anders and Pat did help
Catholic Central qualify their first ever boy's relays to State, making both the 200 medley
and 200 free relays.

All of the swims at Districts were outstanding and our boys picked up numerous Y
Championship cuts along the way! Making Y National cuts were Anders in the 50 free
and the 100 free (48.78), Pat in both the 50 free (22.28) and the 100 back. Greenon
sophmore, Danny Powderley made a Zone cut in the 200 free, going 1:51.59, Fairborn
sophmore Garrett Pringle made Zones in both the 200 IM (2:06.49) and the 100 back (57.26),

Zone in the 100 back as well (57.66), and North sophmore Drew Keriazes made Zones
in the 100 breast (1:03.21).

So an outstanding performance by all of our high school athletes!

SPY Takes 1st Dual Meet of the Season!

Here is a new feature we will be publishing after every meet! The new "Meet Report" will give some fun facts and accomplishments related to the meet.

This past Saturday SPY hosted it's first dual meet of the year against the Beavercreek Y! SPY had nearly 90 swimmers in competition, a very good number considering that this did not include any of our high school swimmers, kids in other sports, and losses due to illness. Our kids did a great job defeating Beavercreek by a score of 4566.5 to 2753.5!

We had 3 new swimmers make their first "AA" cuts for the year; Grant Osborn in the 50 breaststroke (45.31), Seth Seibert in the 50 fly (38.91), and Robbie Ashbaugh in the 50 breast (40.66). Next we had a number of new "AA" cuts that were achieved by swimmers who had already made cuts at past meets, this list includes:
Elizabeth Lohnes - 25 back - 21.29
Kacie O'Conner - 50 free - 39.47
100 free - 1:29.82 Noelle Wiebeck - 100 IM - 1:41.51
Justin Crew 50 free - 32.96
200 free - 2:42.44
50 fly - 38.09
Madison Kavanaugh 50 fly - 34.36
Amelia Samuelson - 100 fly - 1:17.68
100 IM - 1:13.94
Trevor Keriazes - 50 fly - 34.18
Cameron Riley - 100 breast - 1:26.57
Chris Vandiford - 500 free - 5:46.84
200 IM - 2:25.32

We had numerous swims that were within tenth's of a second of being new "AA" cuts! So let's get everyone working hard so we make those cuts at the next few meets! So overall a great job by our swimmers, parents, and coaches!

Announcements Page

Check out the Announcements page for up-to-date practice times.

Video Stroke Clinic

Over 100 of our SPY swimmers went through the Video Stroke Clinics that were hosted by SPY during the holiday break. These swimmers were video-taped in their strokes and then viewed their swims afterwards. A lot of mistakes were seen and corrected so that our kids are practicing correct techniques in workout and in meets to reach their optimum potential. This is just one of the many new features we are offering this year to give our swimmers an edge over other programs! If yiu did not take advantage of these clinics, they will be offered again during the upcoming season at different times.

SPY Team Office

Within the next week our new SPY Team office will be up and running! The coaching staff will now have a place to call home when not on the deck for practice. The office is located just past the enterance to the big gym. We will have office hours during the week when parents can call or stop in to speak with Coach Bruce or leave a message for any of the other coaches.
